I am sure we all battle discontent.  I think being discontent is one of the biggest struggles in life.  We spend our lives working for something and it is rare we “get there” and “have it all”.  I would love to tell you that I have the solution for being content.  But, I am right there in the trenches with you!  I pray that one day I will get it all together – but honestly, I think discontentment is a life-long struggle that we will always fight.

So, it’s a battle.  And, here is a little ammunition!

1.  Be thankful.

This is a no-brainer.  And you probably are thinking, “Duh! I knew this!”. But, I mean be REALLY thankful.  Be thankful for the little things that you use everyday.  Be thankful for the country you live in. For the food in your belly.  For the roof over your head.  If you really struggle to see things you are thankful for, visit a third world country.  The hashtag #firstworldproblems isn’t a joke.  Visit a child who doesn’t have clean water.  Or a mother who gives up her rice for baby.  And then, be thankful.

 2.  Look through old photo albums

Whether you keep photo albums, or iphoto albums, or photo books, take a walk down memory lane!  Relive the days before you had kids, before you met your boyfriend/husband, before you had a “plan” for your life.  This helps put things in perspective, and helps remind us what we have that’s good in this world.

3.  Buy something small

Itching for the new Clarisonic?  Eyeing that new pair of boots?  Can’t stand that you haven’t been able to afford those family portraits?  Instead, buy a new nail polish.  Or, head to the mall and get a new pair of earrings.  I find that if I want something big, all I need to do is splurge on a new treat from the grocery store.  This kind of cures my itch to buy something new – and keeps me from spending too much money.

4.  Surround yourself with grateful people

You know those people that always have a new outfit and the latest toy?  Yep, you shouldn’t be spending all your time with them.  Or on their blog.  Or on their Pinterest.  It’s not really healthy to have friends that can’t stop talking about expensive things.  Instead, surround yourself with like-minded people who don’t push you to buy new things.  Or to want their life.  Be picky with your friends.  It’s healthy.

5.  Turn your desires into goals

Just because you aren’t “successful” yet, doesn’t mean it can’t be a life-long goal!  I have discovered that I am most happy when I am working hard for something.  Whether it’s saving money for a trip, pursuing a life-long goal, or just wanting something for yourself in 5 years, don’t lose that goal.  Write it down.  Make it a priority.  Find something to do now that prepares you for when that goal is possible.  You are working for it – without being able have it now.  It’s called patience.  And it’s good :).
