I have a love/hate relationship with eyeliner. Honestly, it scares me. I am terrified of the “black hole” look, and for so long I avoided eyeliner like the plague. I am blessed with dark lashes, so I can get away without it. But, because I really love eyeliner done well, I am determined to master this thing. The truth is, there are hundreds of types and brands of eyeliner – where to start? Today I am going to tackle two of my favorite “No Liner” Eyeliner favorites. Next week, I will spend more time on gel eyeliner, and give you some of my tips to mastering it.

No Liner At All

I have discovered that if I maximize on my mascara and eyeshadow, I can get a good dark lash line without eyeliner. I believe everyone should use a dark black mascara – regardless of your hair color. Black mascara opens the eyes and gives the lashes a fuller effect. My absolute favorite mascara is L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara. It does wonders. If you wiggle the brush into your lash line, it automatically creates a dark line. For an added bonus, hold a business card above your eye to brush your lashes up against. This really works and is an awesome trick! See more here.

For an added eyeliner-look, rub a dark eyeshadow above your lash line while you are applying your eyeshadow. Most eyeshadow palettes offer a dark color. This is perfect for right above your lash line – and it takes no time or skill like an eyeliner would.

MomTip: Use this hair dryer (that is taking the world by storm) to wash your hair at night, and style it in the morning! I sleep with my hair in a wet braid, and this hair dryer revives my hair and completely style it in under 10 minutes. It's a game changer.

Bottom Lash Line Only

Last summer my cousin Emily and I received a makeover from our local Origins counter. We absolutely loved it. The Origins rep taught us how to only apply eyeliner on the bottom lash line. I really never had cared about the bottom last line before, but this trick is genius! Now, I let my mascara take care of the top lashes, and I swipe a brown eyeliner on the bottom lash line. This really opens up my eyes, and gives me that “awake” look when I am tired. I do this most when I have dark circles under my eyes. And, contrary to what you might think, a dark lower lash line works wonders. For this, I like a brown pencil liner. I don’t need a black straight line on the bottom, so I avoid a gel eyeliner here. You can do this in your waterline, or below the waterline. Either works!  I show the Ulta brown eyeliner, but I also love the NYX one, linked below from Amazon.

Lastly, I always finish my eye looks with two easy tricks. One, I always rub below my eyes with a light, skin-colored eyeshadow (I LOVE the Ulta one in “bone” shown in the picture above). This keeps everything from smudging, and works even better than a concealer would on that under-eye area. Secondly, I always remove everything at the end of the day with Coconut Oil, and you can read more about that here. Enjoy!

MomTip: Stuggle with journaling? I love the One-a-Day Journal to chronicle daily thoughts - without committing to a journal! Basically, every night before you go to bed, write one sentence about the day – what happened, what you were feeling – a memory. And that’s it. You do this every night – and then after a year you repeat the same process for a new year. And – you can look back on last year to see what happened “this time last year”. I am now on my third year – and I can’t tell you how precious knowing these memories has been. Start today – no need to wait!
